Op 6 maart a.s. begint in St. Petersburg een groot internationaal baseball (honkbal) toernooi waaraan de landen teams van de USA, Canada, Nederland en 6 clubteams meedoen die in de MLB spelen (Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Devil Rays, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies en de Pittsburg Pirates).
Op de openingsavond 6 maart om 7.00 PM doet Team Nederland de ‘aftrap’ tegen het team van Canada. Uiteraard wordt dan stilgestaan bij het behalen van de wereldtitel door ons Nederlandse team.

Wim Berndsen heeft kans gezien een aantal kaarten te bemachtigen zodat een grote groep Nederlanders (uiteraard in het Oranje!) in de gelegenheid is dit schouwspel helemaal voor niets mee te maken!
Het leek ons een goed idee om behalve het Nederlandse team te steunen, om ook de onderlinge banden van de Lakesiders verder te versterken. Aangezien ik niet van iedereen de e-mailadressen heb (Wil, Anneke, Henk vd Pol, Gerard van der Werf, etc., etc.) zou ik jullie willen verzoeken deze blog door te sturen aan de nog niet geadresseerde Lakesiders.

In verband met de planning en het regelen van de kaarten verneem ik graag op korte termijn (uiterlijk aankomend weekend) wie ons gaat vergezellen op deze vast heel gezellige avond. Afhankelijk van de grootte van de groep kunnen we misschien ook wel gezamenlijk naar St. Petersburg rijden (Yellow Schoolbus?). Laat me dus via e-mail snel weten of je van de partij bent.

ArkeFly vliegt komende zomer rechtstreeks van Schiphol naar Miami en Orlando. De zonnige Amerikaanse staat stond al tijden hoog op het verlanglijstje.

Doordat zowel Miami als Orlando worden aangevlogen krijgen klanten de kans om vanaf een andere luchthaven te vertrekken dan waar men was aangekomen. Deze open jaw mogelijkheid werd jarenlang door Martinair aangeboden, maar verviel toen besloten werd de operatie op één luchthaven te centraliseren.

De vluchten gaan op 24 juni 2011 van start en worden op maandag en vrijdag uitgevoerd. ArkeFly kiest ervoor om vanaf Orlando Sanford (SFB) te vliegen in plaats van Orlando International (MCO). ‘Onze Britse zustermaatschappij Thomson heeft al jaren goede ervaringen op deze kleinschalige luchthaven ten noorden van de stad,’ zegt Manager Product Ver Manfred Laheij. ‘Ik kan uit ervaring vertellen dat het een stressvrije luchthaven is met korte afstanden en een snelle afhandeling. Door de aanwezigheid van Thomson is er zelfs een speciale TUI ontvangstruimte.’

It’s that time of year again. The weather is cooler, the humidity has dropped, and the days are just about perfect. That means it’s time for the annual Citrus County Festival of the Arts.

The 39th year of the Festival will again be staged around the Courthouse Square in Inverness the first full weekend of November.

Each year several thousand people attend the festival to enjoy the conviviality of a hometown event, as well as the wide-ranging and high-quality artwork and crafts of a hundred artisans. “This event is special for so many reasons,“ says Pati Smith, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Inverness.

“One of the most important is the talented artists who offer very desirable products in a wide range of classifications that cannot be found in stores. Another very special aspect of the Festival is its friendly, welcoming atmosphere that only a small town can offer.”

Smith says Citrus County public school students as well as home-schooled students will also be participating in the Festival this year. “People are always impressed and often surprised at the quality of artwork that the students display,” she adds.

The Festival is sponsored by the Festival of the Arts Committee, the City of Inverness and the Citrus County Chronicle. It is held each year as a way to promote the arts as well as to raise money for scholarships for art students in Citrus County.

This year, three $1500 scholarships were awarded, one to Katelyn Bartley of Crystal River High School, one to Theodore Olson of Lecanto High School, and one to Tiffany Richards of Citrus High School.

One very popular fund-raiser of recent years is the commemorative Festival of the Arts pin. This year’s pin, which is made of pewter, features artists’ brushes wrapped in an artistic scroll.

The pin is the creation of Kelsey Pyers, a Lecanto High School senior, who won the Festival Committee’s competition to design the pin for this year’s Festival. The pins will be available for purchase at the Festival.

Another fundraiser for this year’s scholarship program, is a piece of display art made of stained glass in various shades of blue, reminiscent of the seas. This beautiful item was provided to the Festival of the Arts by Louise Whitney of Homosassa at a fraction of its actual value.

The Festival runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both Saturday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 7.

There is no admission charge.

De 2010 real estate taxes (property taxes) zijn verstuurd en vele zullen deze hebben ontvangen. Belasting betalen is nooit leuk, maar het ziet er naar uit dat de belasting lager is uitgevalen dan vorig jaar. Ik wil er U gaarne op wijzen dat de eerste verval datum 30 November is en daarna heeft U nog 4x de mogelijkheid (Dec 31, Jan, 31, Feb 28 an Mar 31) om deze belasting te betalen, uiteraard wordt het bedrag per maand hoger.

Citrus County real estate taxes are due each year November 1, payable through March 31, of the following year, with discounts allowed for early payments and a 3% penalty imposed beginning April 1. Items remaining unpaid by mid-April are advertised in the local newspaper for four consecutive weeks in May in an effort to notify the property owners of outstanding tax liability.
